Road Trip Cyprus
Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus, is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, making up part of the South of Turkey and West of Syria. This island country has strong Greek influences, while you can also notice Turkish marks on some parts.
It’s one of the most peaceful places on earth, with craggy mountains, striking countryside, and a variety of gorgeous beaches, endless golden sands, sea caves and fascinating history and culture.
We travelled to Cyprus in mid-April 2022. Since we love road trips, we decided to go for a 7-day road trip with two of our best buddies, Clyde and Sandro, where we visited Limassol, Ayia Napa, Larnaca, Nicosia and Paphos. We wanted to see it all!
There’s so much to see and do, and in this blog, we’re telling you all you need to know when visiting this beautiful island country. We’re also telling you where we found the Red Lake!!
Some Things To Know Before
Best time to visit
The ideal months to visit Cyprus are between May and October, as the weather is warm and rarely rains. However, in April, temperatures were already high while we were there. We suggest skipping July and August if you want to avoid big crowds.
Communication
Although the official languages in Cyprus are Greek and Turkish, communicating with locals is easy as they speak good English.
Currency
The currency in Cyprus is the Euro (โฌ). This country isn’t costly, but it’s more expensive than the Balkans and cheaper than the Nordic countries.
Driving And Getting Around Cyprus
Whether you rent a car, use local buses or take a taxi in Cyprus, it is straightforward and affordable. It won’t be a challenge, that’s for sure.
The roads are in excellent condition and very pleasant and safe to drive. Remember that Cyprus is one of the four European countries that drive on the left side of the road, the same as the UK, the Republic of Ireland and Malta. For us, it was easier since we the same back home.
If you’re considering making a road trip in Cyprus by renting a car, we suggest using Rentalcars.com as they offer very affordable rentals. They also bring you the car at the airport without the hassle to go at their office. (Even if it’s late in the evening).
Must See in Cyprus
Limassol
Limassol is a beautiful city on the South coast of Cyprus, home to the Cyprus Medieval Museum and mostly known for its centuries-old Limassol Castle. One can find so many ancient sites which aren’t worth missing. We loved wandering around the streets, representing the city’s culture and civilization.
Not To Miss In Limassol
- Limassol Castle
- Ancient Kourion
- Limassol Old Town
- The Grand Mosque
Ayia Napa
Ayia Napa is in the Eastern part of Cyprus and is mainly known for its sandy beaches and dynamic nightlife. After quite a long time being away from partying, we took the opportunity while in Ayia Napa to get into that nightlife spirit again, and it was so much fun! We stayed in an apartment just a 5-minute walk from the clubs, which we highly recommend. You can check it out here. But, apart from the beaches and nightlife, thereโs so much more to explore in Ayia Napa!
Not To Miss In Ayia Napa
- Sea Caves
- Agioi Anargiroi Dive Site
- Ayia Napa Monastery
- Agia Saranta Cave Church
- Nissi Beach
- Love Bridge – Kamara Tou Koraka Stone Arch Monarchus Arch
Larnaca
Larnaca, well known for its palm-tree seafront, also called Foinikoudes, is a port city on the South coast of Cyprus. Being the 3rd largest city in Cyprus, there are so many amusing attractions to see.
Not To Miss In Larnaca
- Church of Saint Lazarus
- Kamares Aqueduct
- Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque
- Larnaca Salt lake

Paphos
Paphos is known for its sea turtles, which come to shore in Summer to lay their eggs. Itโs a city on the Southwest coast of Cyprus, also famous for its ancient history and beautiful beaches. If you plan to visit Cyprus, Paphos should be on your list.
Not To Miss In Paphos
- Adonis Baths Waterfalls
- Avakas Gorge Nature Trail
- Aphrodite’s Rock
- Kato Paphos Archaeological Park
- Tombs of the Kings
Nicosia
Nicosia, the divided capital city of Cyprus, is also known as Lefkosia. An unusual fact about Nicosia is that itโs the only capital city in the world split in two. The Turkish troops took over the Northern part when they invaded the island in 1974.
Not To Miss In Nicosia
- Nicosia Old Town
- The Green Line (where the city is split in 2)
- Selimiye Mosque
- Venetian Fortifications
Our favourite from all the NOT TO MISS in the whole of Cyprus!
Kokkinopezoula Lake
Kokkinopezoula Lake is a red lake in Mitsero, 28 km Southwest of Nicosia. The water in this lake became red due to the high acid from the copper mine.
We discovered this lake unexpectedly! To access this acid lake, pass through an unpaved road, trespass behind a barbed fence, and hike to the lake. You can enjoy the fantastic views of the lake from above, surrounded by high rocks.
Kokkinopezoula Lake is a very rare site, so take as many photos as possible! At least, thatโs what we did!
IMPORTANT! Do NOT touch the water! Itโs poisonous and can damage your body!
