Let’s jump straight into the list!
On the top of our list, the Grossglockner, towering 3,798 meters above the Adriatic, claims the title of Austria’s highest mountain and the most elevated in the Alps east of the Brenner Pass. Closed within the expansive Glockner Group of the Hohe Tauern range, it graces the main ridge of the Central Eastern Alps and the Alpine divide.ย
As the highest peak in the Alpine Republic, the Grossglockner is one of the most prominent summits in the Eastern Alps, a beacon for passionate mountaineers. If you love scenic drives, the Grossglockner Highway is a must-not-miss experience, ranking among the top three scenic drives we’ve ever experienced. This route offers a spectacular, exciting journey with well-designed viewpoints and roadside attractions, including the impressive visitors centre at the Glacier.
The route is generally open from early to mid-May until early November. When we visited at the end of September, the road conditions were good. However, some hiking trails were closed due to the remaining winter effects. Caution is advised, especially near the peak areas where snow may persist.
As for the operating hours, the road welcomes travellers around from sunrise to sunset, with specific time frames for different months:
- Early May to May 31: 6:00 a.m. โ 8:00 p.m. (Last entry: 7:15 p.m.)
- June 1 to August 31: 5:30 a.m. โ 9:00 p.m. (Last entry: 8:15 p.m.)

Hvar, Croatia
Hvar is one of our favourite islands. Situated in the Adriatic Sea, it is a renowned Croatian destination celebrated as a summer resort. The port town of Hvar boasts highlights, including the Renaissance-era Hvar Cathedral at the main square, 13th-century walls, and a hilltop fortress.ย
The island’s charm extends to its many features, beaches like Dubovica, lavender fields inland, and boat excursions to the secluded beaches and coves of the nearby Pakleni Islands.
Renowned as the most famous Croatian island, Hvar is known for its turquoise waters, warm climate, lavender fields, and vibrant nightlife. Beyond its natural beauty, Hvar captivates with its rich history, cultural heritage, picturesque countryside, and hidden bays, offering ample opportunities for swimming.
Access to Hvar is conveniently provided by a ferry ride from Split, providing almost an hour of scenic views en route to Porto di Hvar.ย
If you plan on visiting around October, note that it’s a low season from that month, and most locals return to Split. Most places are closed, and the ferry doesn’t work frequently, so always check the ferry schedules.

Kokkinopezoula Lake, Cyprus
Just 28 kilometres southwest of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, lies the village of Mitsero. Near this quaint village is an extraordinary water body called Mitsero Lake, known as Kokkinopezoula Lake. This small reservoir, spanning a length of 700 meters, unveils a genuinely unique feature โ its distinct red colour.
The colour of the lake’s water results from elevated acidity levels stemming from a nearby copper mine. We discovered this lake unexpectedly.ย
To reach this extraordinary red lake, pass through an unpaved road, navigate behind a barbed fence, and hike to the lake. Once there, a breathtaking panorama unfolds, with the red waters encircled by towering rocks, creating a surreal atmosphere.
Kokkinopezoula Lake is rare, making it an ideal place for photographs. We advise capturing as many photos as possible, as we did during our visit.
Very important โ refrain from any contact with the water! Its poisonous nature poses a severe threat to your well-being and can cause significant harm to your body. While the beauty of this red lake is undeniable, safety must remain a top priority during your exploration of this unique and striking natural wonder.
