Let’s be honest. Who doesn’t like travelling without spending too much money? Whether on a short trip or travelling for a long time, if you want to travel cheaper and better, you need to make your money last, especially if you’re on the road. We must admit that we love saving money while travelling to keep doing what we love.
We’re sharing some helpful tips on saving money while travelling from our experience on the road.
Tips and tricks to make your money last longer while on the road
Do Your Research
Research the countries you want to visit and make a rough plan before leaving. Don’t just leave before knowing what to expect. At least have a simple idea.
Make A Budget
Know what you want to spend money on the most, whether it’s accommodation, food, attractions or something else.
Be Realistic
Don’t pretend to visit some expensive countries if you know they exceed your budget unless you’re working online and have an income.
Keep Track Of All Your Expenses
You can use a journal or an app to do so. We found the Money Lover and Trail Wallet apps practical, but several other options exist. This way, you’ll note what you’re spending money on most. Learn how to balance.
NB: Trail Wallet is only available on IOS
Avoid Bank Fees While Travelling
We have a lot of friends who end up paying an excessive amount of money on ATM fees and bank card transaction fees while abroad. We suggest using Revolut to easily change the currency without paying extra fees. Always do your research beforehand! Download here: Play Store or Apple Store.
Choose Free Or Cheap Accommodations
You’ll spend most of your time exploring the countries, not staying indoors. Otherwise, you would stay at home. Right? Staying with locals is free of charge, and it’s the most exciting way to make new friends and learn more about their culture. You can also choose hostels or guesthouses, which aren’t too expensive and are another way of making new friends. You can easily find cheap apartments in most countries. Avoid expensive hotels and apartments just for the sake of being comfortable.
Taxis vs Cheap Transport vs Hitchhiking
Avoid paying for taxis while travelling when you can use public transport, which is much cheaper. Another option is hitchhiking. Once you do your first hitchhike, it will be the first on your mind to travel from one place to another. It’s free and so much fun!
Why Eat In Restaurants When You Can Eat Cheaper?
Never think travelling on a budget means you can’t have a proper meal! If you stay in hostels, guesthouses, or private accommodations, buy groceries and cook a meal yourself. If the place isn’t equipped with a kitchen, you can always choose street food that’s also delicious and affordable.
Be Careful With Overseas Calls
Generally, your home phone provider offers an international phone plan without swapping your SIM card. In some countries where roaming doesn’t apply, the cheapest option is to buy a local SIM.
Avoid Non-Essential Shopping
Don’t waste money on useless things. If you have enough clothes for your trip, you don’t need to buy those extra trousers just because you like them. Remember, the longer your money lasts, the longer your travels can be.
Don’t Pay For Attractions You’re Not Interested In
If people suggest visiting a particular museum and you’re not keen on it, don’t go! Seeing it from the outside should be enough if you decide to go out of curiosity. Sometimes you can be surprised how much extra money you spend on attractions which weren’t your worth.
