What to Know

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Moldova is between April and September. Temperatures vary between -5 °C in winter and occasional highs of 40°C in summer. Rainfall tends to be irregular and limited during this period.

Currency and ATMs

The official currency in Moldova is the Moldovan Leu. ATMs are limited in Chișinău, and they may not always work. ATMs outside the capital are scarce. In Transnistria, ATMs don’t accept cards from non-Transnistrian banks. The currency in Transnistria is the Transnistrian ruble, and currency exchange outside of Transnistria is impossible.

Safety Rank

Moldova ranks 57th in safety out of 163 countries, with rare violent crimes against tourists but common scams and pick-pocketing, especially around bus stations in Chișinău. Be respectful and obey orders, especially near borders. Despite concerns about the conflict with Ukraine, Moldova is considered a safe country.

Hitchhiking

Hitchhiking in Moldova is incredibly easy, with no restrictions, whether in Chişinău or elsewhere. Drivers gladly recognise the raised thumb as a signal for autostop. If you’re a foreign traveller, it’s pretty common for drivers to offer to buy you food or drinks while hitchhiking in Moldova.

Visa

Visitors from over 140 countries require tourist visas for Moldova. The Moldovan eVisa is obtained by filling out an online application and receiving the approved visa via email. As per the Moldovan visa policy, various countries’ nationals enjoy visa-free for short stays in Moldova and don’t need a tourist visa.

Plugs

In Moldova, the power plug sockets are of type C and F, with a standard voltage of 220V and a frequency of 50Hz, matching the standard used in almost all European countries and Russia.
