We visited Ukraine back in 2021, a few months before the conflict with Russia started, and it quickly became one of our favourite destinations. Given the many questions we’ve received about this beautiful country, we’ve decided to write this ultimate Ukraine travel guide.

To be honest, we had few expectations upon arrival, but we ended up loving every second of our trip. Ukraine is an affordable country, entertaining, and full of hidden gems, especially if you go off the beaten path. The Ukrainian people are incredibly welcoming, making you feel right at home.

During our three-week stay, we were lucky enough to spend some days with locals and discovered thereโ€™s so much to see and do in this country that we could have stayed even longer.

Weโ€™re still in touch with locals and friends who visited Ukraine a few weeks ago and can confirm that the country is now safe to visit. This guide offers information from our incredible experiences to help anyone concerned about visiting Ukraine.ย

About Ukraine

Ukraine, located in Eastern Europe, is the continent’s second-largest country after Russia. Although the official language is Ukrainian, people also speak Russian and Crimean Tatar. Among its many unique features, Ukraine boasts the deepest metro station in the world.ย

While Russia’s recent invasion of Crimea requires caution near the Russian border, the rest of Ukraine remains safe for travellers. This vibrant country offers a rich cultural experience and a variety of attractions that are well worth exploring.

Visa

You can visit Ukraine without a visa only if your country is on the visa-exempt list. For those who need a visa, Ukraine offers a tourist visa to eligible nations. Check your visa requirements with theย  Visa Checker tool before planning your trip.

Internet

Ukraine offers highly affordable internet services, ranking among the top three countries with the cheapest internet in the world.

We strongly recommend buying the Airalo eSIM for its immediate activation and the convenience of not needing a physical SIM card. Airalo allows you to access local rates, typically much cheaper than international roaming charges. This will enable you to use your phone as if you were at home, saving you up to 85% on roaming costs.

Safety

Despite conflicts in certain regions, most of Ukraine is now safe for tourists. Improved security measures, an increased police presence, and stability, especially in tourist areas, ensure a secure environment.ย

The conflict with Russia in Crimea is currently restricted to that region. You should be fine if you avoid visiting Crimea, which still requires a special permit. Other than that, Ukraine warmly welcomes visitors.

For any emergency, call 112.

For extra safety, we recommend securing good travel insurance that covers military risks when visiting Ukraine during your stay.

Getting Around

Marshrutka

Ukraine is a large country with an incredible public transport system that makes travelling easy and affordable, with many cheap options to choose from.

Buses

In Ukraine, there are various buses, including modern coaches. FlixBus is one of the best options for its cleanliness, reliability, and affordability.ย

Buses are available to almost any destination within the country, and if you switch buses midway you pay half the original price.

Marshrutkas

Marshrutkas are a fun way of transportation in Ukraine; in fact, we used them several times. These are small, private minibuses that travel across the country, offering fares similar to public transportation.ย

Prices and route details are usually shown on the windows or inside the vehicles. You must pay the driver directly. However, it’s not guaranteed that the driver will give you a ticket.

Trains

Trains are an ideal option for longer journeys across Ukraine. Many trains have an old Soviet feeling but are very reliable, safe, and affordable.ย Overnight trains are also available, allowing you to save on accommodation by travelling overnight.

Taxis

Taxis are another convenient option and an easy way to get around Ukraine. Many taxi companies are available in all cities. We recommend Bolt for its reliability, and OnTaxi is another good option for online ride-sharing. You can pay for your ride with cash, card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Car Rentals

If you’re planning a road trip in Ukraine, renting a car is your best option. You’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to do so. We recommend using Rentalcars.com, where you’ll find a variety of car rental choices.

Hitchhiking

Hitchhiking has become more challenging since the Crimean conflict with Russia, but it’s still possible. Accessing the Crimean peninsula, which now requires foreigners to travel through Russia, can be quite difficult in the summer due to the heat.

Must See and Do

Lviv

Lviv

Lviv is one of our favourite places in Ukraine. It’s the largest city in western Ukraine and the sixth-largest in the country, with a population of 717,273. When you visit Lviv, you’ll be amazed by the vibrant bar and restaurant scene and the many things to see and do. One of the most interesting attractions is the Territory of Terror Memorial Museum.

Kyiv

Kyiv

Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital and most populous city is located along the Dnieper River in north-central Ukraine. As a symbol of courage and strength, it’s one of the most unique places in the country.

This city holds a special place in our hearts, as we created so many beautiful memories. We highly recommend kayaking on the Dnieper River for an amazing experience.

However, be careful of scams in Kyiv. Avoid buying roses from random street vendors or giving money to strangers who claim to be homeless unless you’re sure they genuinely need help, as scams are common.ย

Also, avoid taking photos with white pigeons, as the handlers often ask for a large sum of money afterwards for using your own mobile to take the pictures.

Odesa

Odesa is Ukraine’s third-most populous city, with many things to see and explore. As the country’s main trading and fishing port, its harbour remains open year-round, thanks to icebreakers in winter. The locals in Odesa mainly speak Russian.

Where to Stay

There are thousands of options for accommodations in Ukraine. If you’re visiting for a week and mainly staying in Kyiv, we suggest staying in the city centre to be close to all the main attractions. However, splitting your stay between different areas is ideal if you’re staying longer.
